MeiTY – Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has sanctioned a supercomputer to be inducted at NIT Trichy as part of the National SuperComputing Mission (NSM).
The supercomputer will be installed by the C-DAC (Centre for Development of Advanced Computing) on the NIT Trichy premises. It will help research scholars aand faculty members working on research and projects involving high-end computing.
“The supercomputing facility will attract Prime Minister’s Research Fellow (PMRF) and other research scholars to the institute and will be a boon for the faculty members,” said Mini Shaji Thomas, director, NIT-Trichy. She added that NIT-T is the first NIT in the country to get the supercomputing facility, speaking to Times of India.
What is a supercomputer?
A supercomputer is a massive and powerful computer capable of performing tasks that cannot be done by normal computers. The processing power of a supercomputer is equivalent to thousands or lakhs of desktops. Supercomputers are generally used for research. Real world applications include weather forecasting, code breaking, nuclear test simulations, outbreak prevention etc.
History of India’s supercomputing programs
India’s supercomputer program was first started in the 1980’s when India created its own ingenious supercomputer under the stewardship of Mr.Rajiv Gandhi. As of 2019, India is ranked 22nd in the global ranking for supercomputers. India’s most powerful supercomputer is installed at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology in Pune.
