Trichy: Mobile Health Centre ‘Vizhuthugal’ Launched for PwD Rehabilitation

Ministers K. N. Nehru and Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi launched Vizhuthugal (Prop Roots), a mobile health centre aimed at early identification and rehabilitation of persons with disabilities (PwD) from economically weaker rural families.
As part of the World Bank-funded TN RIGHTS project, this initiative enhances accessibility and support for PwDs in Tamil Nadu. Trichy is among five districts selected for the pilot phase, along with Tenkasi, Cuddalore, Dharmapuri, and Chennai.
Despite the presence of four one-stop rehabilitation centres in Musiri, Manapparai, Trichy city, and Lalgudi, many PwDs in remote villages struggle to access them, delaying crucial rehabilitation. To bridge this gap, Vizhuthugal – a specially equipped mobile unit—will deliver doorstep healthcare services.
The bus is staffed by four paramedics and features:
- Physiotherapy, audiometry, and optometry compartments
- A hydraulic lift for wheelchair access
- CCTV surveillance for security
- A diesel generator for uninterrupted power.

The mobile unit will operate across all 14 administrative blocks, including Thuraiyur, T Pettai, Musiri, and Thiruverumbur, ensuring essential healthcare services reach PwDs in remote areas.
