Heritage Park History and Culture 2023 Highlights, Statues and Facilities
Heritage Park is being built on 1.27 acres of land that was once used as a horse stable. The archway of the stables is still used as the main entrance to the park. The park is being set up at a cost of ₹4 crore under the Smart Cities program to carry the history of Trichy to the next generation.
Construction of the park began in December 2019. However, operations were halted in March 2020 following the COVID-19 lockdown and the project was delayed due to delay in procuring the idols from the Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation,” said Corporation Commissioner R. Vaithyanathan.
Murals, statues, statues of former kings including Rani Mangammal, Karikala Cholan who built the Kallanai, Raja Raja Cholan who built the Tanjore Great Temple will be featured to show the vibrant history of the city through the ages. Detailed descriptions of the past and important landmarks will be highlighted.
Highlights of the heritage park include a stone-carved arched entrance gate, Children’s play area, a large Herb Garden with various Medicinal Plants and Roses, Landscaping and fountains, Pedestrian walkways and an Amphitheater where cultural events can be held. “All the concrete structures have been completed and the work will be completed once the Poompukar statues and murals are ready,” said Mr. Vaithinathan.
After a year-long delay, work on setting up a heritage park on Butterworth Road near Rockford to celebrate Trichy’s culture and history is expected to be completed within a month.
Among the unique features, the park will have restrooms, drinking water facilities and parking space to accommodate two-wheelers and four-wheelers. About 90% of the work has been completed and the park is expected to be opened to the public within a month.
